Tips to Find One’s Personal Style of Writing

When we converse with someone, we tend to notice their ways of communicating that are unique to them. Established fashion designers also tend to develop a unique fashion style.

This is similar to writing as well, including blog writing. A few specific styles of writing remain true to their writer.

With the current trend of short content on the rise, it has become increasingly gruesome to hold someone’s attention or sustain the readership of one’s work for a long period. Making a write-up interesting requires time, attention, and effort. One way to achieve this and deliver it repeatedly is by developing a particular writing style. However, to develop a personal writing style, the writer needs to understand their strengths and the audience being catered to. Every writer must know what writing style they’re most comfortable with before conforming to specifics.

A writer’s style of writing is their medium of self-expression. When one develops a writing style, it ends up becoming a different perspective or a lens to view various scenarios.

Not everyone is born with a writing style. It can be achieved after testing the waters and deciding what works best for them. To attain this kind of specialist prowess in writing, here are a few points to keep in mind:

1. Have a source of inspiration

Writers must have a source of inspiration or an ideology they find interesting enough to write about. This inspiration can be fictional, can be extracted from one’s stimulus, or can be a point of observation over time that the writer deems important enough to voice.

2. Be authentic

After finding something to write about, a writer must know how to best present their bouquet of thoughts in a manner that is true to their writing style. Often, writing styles unknowingly overlap with the styles people surround themselves with through different books, articles, or sources of information. A good writer must know how to extract their inspiration and present it in the most authentic way possible.

3. Be decisive about elements of writing

Before formulating an article, decide on aspects like voice and tone of the write-up. The voice reflects the personality of the text, while the tone refers to the attitude that the writing imbibes. The tone is conveyed via grammar, word choice, and sentence structure

that the writer uses to disseminate information. These elements of writing also include the nature of the text, i.e., informative, narrative, interrogative, etc. All these things aspects make up a very critical part of the article.

4. Make it relatable

Facts and figures are always available for readers but what makes a piece of writing truly interesting is how the audience can relate to these facts. If a writer takes inspiration or cues from their own life experiences, the interest also reflects on the readership. Furthermore, extracting from one’s experiences is an added distinctive perspective, usually well-received by readers.

5. Maximize engagement

A good writer can keep the readers glued to their text. Such writers often use the tools of suspense or plots. The process of reading must be all-consuming, whether it be an article or any other form of text. This narrative tone of storytelling comes from the efficient use of tools to convey all the details.

6. Master the skill

To be the best at what one writes needs constant work and attention. It is important to hone one’s craft and practice regularly to achieve that. The more a person writes, the better is their hold over the elements of writing. It also helps in differentiating their style of writing.

7. Be experimental

One must not be intimidated to move out of their comfort zone, even in writing. While expressing the writer’s personality and intellectual self, they must remember to push their boundaries and use a range of literary stylistic devices to strengthen their argument.

8. Read as much as you can

Agatha Christie, Stephen King, Willian Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, etc., are some of the authors with their own unique style of writing. They developed these voices and tones throughout their career and never stopped learning. Focus on how they use words and sentences to tell a story. Read your favorites and also authors you are not so familiar with.

This might seem like a lot to cater to when stated exclusively. However, when writers create a checklist of these points, they may have a high probability of succeeding when they create a checklist of these points—these points when catered to adequately, result in a convincing and insightful blog.
