Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Staying safe while going for a run involves being aware of your surroundings. Even if you love to jam in both earphones and turn the volume to the max, it may not be the best idea — especially while going for a run at night.

Make sure you can hear what’s going on around you. Don’t get too involved in your phone or thoughts and make sure you stay observant.

Don’t Share Your Route Publicly

Many people love to share their achievements when running, whether that’s because they’ve gotten faster or they’re managing to go for longer distances. Many apps will track your route and allow you to share it online to brag about your accomplishments.

This, however, is a bad idea.

If someone is planning to attack you, it’s all too easy for them to pop onto your social media and see exactly where to find you.

Share Your Location With a Loved One

While you shouldn’t share your location publicly, you should share it with a loved one. Turn on an app on your phone that allows someone to see your location so if there’s anything strange going on or you don’t get home on time, they can immediately spot your location.

Find a Partner

Why not find a running partner? There’s safety in numbers, and running with someone else may deter attackers.

You’ll just have to make sure you have a similar fitness level so you can effectively run together for the whole route!

Taking self-defense classes is another great idea for staying safe while going for a run at night.

There are many different kinds of classes that work for different people, but they will give you the tools needed to be confident in your ability to protect yourself.
